When the city began to expand outside the castle, the houses were built next to each other and very close to each other to ensure safety from raids (mainly pirates and especially from Barbarossa). The outer houses had battlements and were inhabited by heavily armed people who would notify each other (in case of a raid) and retreat to the castle of Parga for safety. Groups organized real defense, such as e.g. the neighborhood (KOULOURI), where the arch in the photograph is , called (PORTOKOULOURIA), is preserved, where in all probability there was a permanent Venetian outpost. This is mentioned by Salvatore, as a guard at the city gate (city gate -Porta della citta) of the first bastion. Right in front of the (city gate-Porta della citta), passes the stream of Agios Nikolaos, which was uncovered, deep and functioned as a kind of moat and reinforced the defense and as we said, it was the first line of the city’s defense in those years.
